Automile uses the following approaches to capture initial odometer reading:
1) Depending on the vehicle model, we automatically collect the odometer reading
2) If we are unable to capture the odometer reading automatically, then the user can enter the initial value in the system.
We calculate mileage by using vehicle's speedometer and GPS. This calculation has high reliability. However, sometimes you may see that the odometer value is not 100% matching with what shows in Automile. You don't need to worry about it if the difference is less than 2%.
A vehicle's mileage varies depending on a lot of factors (such as tire size, tire rotation during different seasons etc.). Generally speaking, the odometer value calculation that the vehicle shows is based on different factors and Automile calculates it based on what the speedometer and the GPS reports.
Hence, about a 2% difference is normal in the world of mileage tracking and this is accurate when it comes to logging mileage for tax deduction purposes. Automile's mileage log is IRS compliant.
